How Does the Solar Thermal System Work?
A solar water heater harnesses the solar electricity directly through the heat energy. Unlike solar PV kits, the thermal system captures the solar energy in the form of usable heat energy. This system is 4-5 more efficient in using 60-80% of the captured heat energy versus 12-16% in a solar PV kit.
The solar collector uses vacuum tube to capture heat energy from the sun and transfer to the heating fluid present in a closed solar loop. Again the heating fluid is transferred by a small pump through an internal heat exchanger located in the bottom of the residential water tank. The hot fluid starts losing its heat energy to the colder residential water and circulates back to the solar collector, which will be heated again by solar thermal energy.
The thermal system uses a differential controller to turn on and off the pump depending on the temperature between the heating fluid and water in the tank. A second heat exchanger is present at the top of the water tank. It can be used to move energy in the storage tank to the second heating zone like flooring heating in winter, pool or hot tub in the summer.
